What is Australia's climate like?
People often think that in Australia it is hot all year round or that it is always summer. While it is true that Australia's climate is warm in some parts of the country, it is not the same in all cities or in all areas. For example, did you know that Australia also has some great ski resorts?
Located in the southern hemisphere, Australia's summer lasts from December to March (with an average temperature of 29°C), autumn from March to May, winter from June to August (with an average temperature of 13°C) and spring from September to November. Summer is hot and dry, while winter is cool, wet and windy. It is actually a very light winter compared to winters in North America or Europe.
There are four seasons throughout most of Australia, except in the north, where there are only two: a wet season and a dry season, due to its tropical climate.
Australia's geography is mainly desert, with a semi-arid climate. In fact, Australia is one of the driest countries in the world. Forty per cent of its territory is made up of sand dunes and semi-arid lands commonly known as outback, which is also a distinctive feature of Australia's landscape.

Weather in Sydney
Sydney's climate is mild, especially in winter when the average temperature ranges from 24°C in January to 13°C in July. It is a city with a fair amount of rainfall, well distributed throughout the seasons, although the rainiest is autumn. Weather in Sydney comes with a decent amount of sunshine, even in winter there can be sunny days.
Weather in Brisbane
The climate in Brisbane is hot, humid and rainy in summer but with ideal, short and cool winters. It is a very sunny city with temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. No wonder the area is called the Sunshine Coast.
Weather in Melbourne
Melbourne is known for its changeable weather. One of its main features is the ability to experience all four seasons in one day. In summer, you can enjoy average temperatures of between 14°C and 25°C . Summer in Melbourne is dry, with occasional heatwaves that can last for more than three days. Melbourne's maximum temperatures tend to be in January and February, when average highs can occasionally exceed 30°C.
In autumn the weather is cooler, with sunny days, although towards the end of the season there can be long periods of light winds. In winter, average temperatures range from 6.5°C to 14°C, and snow falls in Victoria's northeast, known as the High Country. The weather is often cold and cloudy, and nights can be accompanied by frost. Heavy rainfall is rare at this time of year. During the spring, temperatures range from 9°C to 19°C. This season is known as the most variable of the year, when the weather can change rapidly.
Climate in Western Australia
Perth is renowned as Australia's sunniest capital city, offering 131 amazing days of blue skies a year. With a summer average high of 29°C (February being the warmest month) and a winter average of 12°C, Perth is perfect for nature lovers. Weather in Perth will offer you plenty of outdoors and adventure.
Margaret River and the South West have warm summer days (25-35°C) ideal for hanging out on the beach and surfing. In winter (8-16°C) you can enjoy the scenery and vineyards. If you head further north to the Esperance area and the Golden Outback, temperatures range from 15°C in winter to 37°C in the summer months. There's a lot of diversity in the climate across the vast region - but you 'll always find adventure, whatever the weather.
