Yesterday, the Prime Minister decided the full lockdown of New South Wales and Victoria states in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The lockdown come into effect today (Monday 23rd of March) at 12pm in Victoria. Here’s what you need to know and how it affects us.
Should I stay home ?
YES, in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Australia, we should ALL stay home and avoid social contact and non essential travels.
The governement is going to be very strict if you don’t respect that rule.
What Will Be Closed?
From 12pm Monday 23 March, the following businesses must close:
- Pubs
- Clubs
- Cinemas
- Casinos
- Nightclubs
- Indoor places of worship
- Gyms
- Indoor sporting venues
- Victorian schools will be closed from Tuesday 24 March

The following National Parks are also closing down
- The Twelve Apostles
- 1000 Steps/Kokoda Memorial Walk and Lyrebird Trail
- Accommodation and camping at Tidal River will be closed from 22 March
- Penguin viewing platform at St Kilda is closed. The pier remains open
- Sovereign Hill
- Mackenzie Falls in Grampians National Park
- Werribee Mansion
What will remain open?
"Essential services" will remain open, they include the following:
- Supermarkets
- Banks
- Petrol Stations
- Pharmacies
- Convenience Stores
- Freight and logistics businesses
- Food delivery services
- Bottle shops
- Hairdressers
- Beauticians
- Cafes & restaurants who already do, or have adapted to take away only
- Mechanics
- Public transport
How Long Will The Lockdown Last?
The Prime Minister declared last night these restrictions could remain in place for 6 months if needed so Australians must prepare.
"The more we share the sacrifice, the more we do the right thing together as Australians, the more lives we will save, the more livelihoods we will be able to preserve and the stronger we will all be on the other side."
What about other states ?
Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania have decided in the main time to close their borders to non residents. If you arrive in one of those states coming from NSW or Victoria you must do a 14 days self isolation before being able to go out.
Students what does it mean for you?
With this whole situation being completely new for everyone, we can only go off what information the government is releasing. Each school is then a private institute and will provide their own outcomes for their students and respective situations. All school must closed tomorrow but most of them are doing online classes, please contact directly your school student service for more details.
